Interview with General Manager Grand Hotels Milos Colovic ...
May 2023
... and cultural manager Sina Samieian
La Esplora: How did it come about in the first place that the presentation of works of art was integrated into the concept at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz? Do you maintain active contact with the art scene?
Milos Colovic: The foundation stone was certainly laid with the international sculpture fair, the “Bad RagARTz”. The Triennial of Sculpture takes place over the entire area of Bad Ragaz and attracts visitors from all over the world. Our main shareholders are passionate art collectors themselves and have been heavily involved in the focus in recent years; one has invested heavily in art.
LA ESPLORA: Do you see a new development in presenting art in luxury hotels – are art exhibitions in luxury hotels becoming more and more popular?
Milos Colovic: Art has been exhibited at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz for many years. We present international as well as regional artists. In recent years, however, the topic has come into even sharper focus. The different facets of our hotel, from the versatile range of rooms to the culinary and health institutions, to the wide range of leisure activities, are perfectly complemented by a strategic focus on art. We would like to offer guests a unique added value through the changing exhibitions and an integration into the Bad RagARTz.
LA ESPLORA: You just mentioned versatility. Currently, the resort features numerous international artists, who can also be admired in various locations within the hotel. Which artists are they currently?
Milos Colovic: We present art both indoors and outdoors. Each exhibition venue is deliberately chosen in collaboration with the artists.
Sina Samieian: The artists are indeed world famous. We are currently very proud to present a work by Simone Leigh in our garden. She was honored last year at the Venice Biennale as best artist with the Golden Lion award. Her bronze sculpture “Brick House” – almost 5 meters tall – is now in our garden. It shows the body of a black woman whose skirt resembles a mud hut. Another highlight are the paintings of Louise Bourgeois. We are currently exhibiting her work “Hours of the Day” on loan in our hotel lobby. Also in the park is another famous loan, the sculpture “All In” by Thomas J. Price.
LA ESPLORA: With Boris Dondè you present an artist who creates with his own collage technique a current trend to pop art. How do you classify Boris Dondè’s paintings?
Sina Samieian: For me, Boris Dondè is an artist you can touch. His art is to refine icons even further. The integration of the icons leads to the fact that a broad general public can identify with these works.
LA ESPLORA:
What do you personally like most about the works of Boris Dondè?
Sina Samieian: I find the innovative development of the collage technique in combination with the Pop Art style particularly impressive.
LA ESPLORA: The exhibited paintings by Boris Dondè are also for sale. Who is interested in such works of art?
Sina Samieian: You can’t say that the paintings are bought by a certain clientele. Boris Dondè creates a wide range of image formats in his collections. Thus, a purchase of a smaller format in the four-digit Swiss franc range is possible.
LA ESPLORA: Are there any other art exhibitions planned at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz?
Milos Colovic: Guests can look forward to exhibitions in the future as well. The promotion of art and culture will remain central to the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz in the years to come.
